The Marree Hotel Tours
Traveling the outback, this great vast continent of ours, is more than wind, dust and blistering heat. You soon discover that resting behind an old ruin, a bit of rusted fencing or an abandoned truck lies a story.
Legends of ordinary people etching their mark on the landscape with making the outback their home. Turn and look in any direction and there is a legendary tale to be told here in Marree. Stop for a moment and consider the lives of these legend makers, the Afghans, the Dieri and Arabana people and white settlers – linesmen, settlers, ringers and station hands.
Beyond & Back – 4WD guided tours or tag-along
Explore the BIrdsville Track. Be guided into the heart of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Bush lunches; cattle stations and much more.
The Marree Hotel develops custom-made options that will get you deep into the history, scenic splendor and culture of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre and the desert around Marree.
Phil and Maria van Wegen (publicans) are experienced and enthusiastic about this outback region so they know how to put a ‘special’ and very personal tour together.
You can explore the Birdsville Track and the Cooper Creek and take a day drive up to the Mungerannie Hotel for lunch. Visit Coward Springs or the Arabana heartland – the shores of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. Or, have a couple of nights under the most amazing night skies with 4WD tours into the Willouran Ranges and Finniss Springs Station – the ancestral home of the Arabana.

Witchelina Nature Reserve – 4WD the Willouran Ranges
Witchelina Station is 4,200 square kilometres of some of the regions more explosive scenery – a SA Nature Foundation initiative. In 2010 all the stock were removed to reduce grazing pressure on flora and fauna. Feral pest eradication is an on-going program and this vast region is now resplendent with its natural flora and fauna .
Research is currently underway for the threatened Thick-billed Grasswren, The Gidgee Skink and the Brown Snake – all of which reside on Witchelina.
Ecotourism is part of the station’s commitment to promote alternative land use in the interests of managing, protecting and restoring this stunning land well into the future.
Now you can enjoy this too!
Take the 4WD Loop that gets you into the heart of the Willouran Ranges and the spectacular N’or West Gorge. This full day self-drive adventure takes you past spectacular Ghan Rail bridges, wetlands, unique geological hills and mountains as well as the ruins of a past era, or visit the restored Witchelina homestead. The climax of the drive is the rugged N’or West Gorge – that’ll test your 4WD skills!
